In the two years before I became a teacher I wrote myself little reminder notes about what I would like to teach my students. In my own reflection of how important education was on my life outcome I realized it was not the content material that was most meaningful. Learning math is incredibly important, but even as a person who works in a math field, math was not the most important thing I learned. Armed with that information, I am committed to teach more than math.
I have tried to be intentional and purposeful in the messages I send to my students. Here are some of the lessons beyond math I hope to model and teach my students:
What does it mean to be a leader?
Kindness
Affirmations
Reflections and reflective learning
Hardwork
How to learn anything and the skills needed to do so
Using resources
Not giving up on yourself
Equity
Optimism
The five love languages
Making mistakes
Growth mindset
Diversity
Confidence and self-esteem
