DonorChoose For Classroom Funding

Most of you have probably heard about DonorsChoose, but have you tried it?

I was apprehensive about using DonorsChoose because I didn’t like the idea of asking for funding. Boy am I so glad I overcame that. Last year with the help of the DonorsChoose match offer for first time projects I was able to purchase a full classroom set of wobble stools and stress toys. I was able to fund the entire $1,470 project within the friends and family time frame. I was shocked and in disbelief.

This year, I am so excited to say that I successfully had another project funded. My friends and family donated towards a year subscription for Nearpod, my favorite teaching tool. I timed the project to be posted around my birthday, so I could use the traffic to my Facebook page to ask for funding support. I was also fortunate to qualify for a one-to-one match which helped so much.

If I can have projects successfully funded so can you. When you launch your first project between August 23 and August 29th you are guaranteed $50 towards your project. Plus most first time projects qualify for the friends and family match offer. So each donations in the first week will be matched when the code LIFTOFF is used.

Other Match Offers

There are many wonderful organizations connected with DonorsChoose that provide match funding for qualified projects. Usually the organization will provide criteria for a projects. For example they may require a project fall under a certain category. Those categories could be location based, subject based, or project type (sports related, for supplies, for trips).

In addition to match offers, some organizations provide teachers with DonorsChoose funding for any future project. Google currently has an offer where teachers can earn $100 for teaching a lesson to 15 students. I have used this type of of offer to fund a project for snacks and small classroom supplies. Check out match offers, but remember first time teachers qualify for a match offer in the first week.

Random Acts of Kindness From Outside Donors

DonorsChoose has done a fantastic job of attracting generous donors who donate to projects and sometimes fully fund projects. These donors are strangers to the teachers who post projects. I have not been fortunate to have a project funded by a stranger, but I see it all of the time on the DonorChoose Teacher Community Facebook group.
